High School Principal

JKL Bahweting Anishnabe School is accepting applications for a Full-time High School Principal for the 2026-2027 School Year. Salary Range: $90,425 - $134,162 (This is determined by years of experiences in related position). JKL is a currently a K-8 Michigan public charter school dedicated to outstanding educational experiences, serving approximately 600 students. 27-28 SY JKL will be opening our high school. Position Summary To provide administration of the 9-12 education program including program design, staff supervision, student development, and parent outreach.

Essential Job Functions

• Provide technical and creative leadership for the development, implementation, and monitoring of a new successful 9-12 education program and curriculum.
• Direct the recruitment, screening, interviewing, and recommendations for hire of 9-12 classroom teachers and other 9-12 staff as assigned.
• Assist with the recruitment, screening, interviewing, and recommendations for hire of other building staff as requested.
• Plan and oversee the 9-12 New Teacher Mentoring Program.
• Responsible for scheduling classes for general education teachers and/or classes.
• Provide on-going support and mentoring assistance to 9-12 teachers in instruction, classroom management, assessment, and parent outreach.
• Work in organizing and coordinating grade level and departmental meetings in order to affect horizontal and vertical continuity and articulation of the instructional program throughout the school.
• Direct parent outreach programs including scheduling conferences, communications, progress reports, and report cards.
• Observe, review Individual Professional Growth Plans (IPGPs), and provide end-of-year evaluations and recommendations for improvements for general education 9-12 classroom teachers, paraprofessionals, and other 9-12 staff as assigned.
• Conducts classroom walkthroughs.
• Attend school, district and administrative meetings.
• Coordinates, provides oversight, and evaluates 9-12 classroom teachers, paraprofessionals, and other 9-12 staff as assigned.
• Apply research, data, and recommend interventions to improve academic achievement for 9-12 general education students.
• Actively support the efforts of others to achieve district and school goals.
• Assist instructional administrators in planning and providing effective staff development activities that incorporate the mission of the school, program evaluation outcomes, and input from teachers and other staff.
• Assist instructional administrators in securing consultants, specialists and other community resources.
• Confer with instructional staff to determine professional development needs in areas of school culture and climate.
• Monitor professional research and disseminate ideas and information to regular education classroom.
• Participate in personal professional growth opportunities.
• Work collaboratively as a member of the administrative team established by the Superintendent.
• Act as a liaison between school and community by responding to parent and community concerns/questions and promoting positive public relations.
• Demonstrate professional, ethical, and responsible behavior.
• In collaboration with JKL instructional administrators, keeps abreast of developments in curriculum and instruction, and furnishes leadership in determining their appropriateness for inclusion in the school's educational program.
• In collaboration with JKL instructional administrators, coordinates the study, evaluation, and as appropriate, the recommendation for adoption of new instructional materials, methods, and programs.
• In collaboration with JKL instructional administrators, establishes a program for the ongoing evaluation of instruction.
• In collaboration with JKL instructional administrators, assists in the development and coordination of the sections of the budget that pertain to curriculum and instruction.
• Maintain confidentiality in the conduct of school business.
• Must hold and maintain current CPI certification in verbal de-escalation and physical restraint (training provided by the school district).
• Support Special Education Director in the growth and development of special education students.
• Ensure each 9–12 student earns appropriate course credit and meets all graduation requirements.
• Other related duties as assigned.

Accountability

Position is accountable for academic, staff, instructional support programs, and other services necessary for the safe, orderly, and effective operations of the JKL Bahweting High School.

Contacts

Position has significant daily/weekly contact with internal and external publics in the course of directing school operations. Contacts include State and Federal education programs and fiscal agencies, Northern Michigan University Charter oversight staff, school staff (all groups), Tribal administrative staff, Tribal Health Center, parents, students, community members, Tribal law enforcement, and School Board members.

Qualifications

• Master's Degree or higher in Educational Administration or Educational Leadership.
• Must have a valid Michigan school administrator certificate.
• 5 years experience in education required.
• 5 years teaching or building/school district level administrative experience preferred.
• Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
• Demonstrates good communication skills with parents and professionalism in a variety of situations.
• Must complete and pass a criminal history background check according to applicable laws and school board policies.
• Must comply with all rules and regulations pertaining to safety.
• Must be able to speak English (speak, read, write, and comprehend).

Working Conditions/Safety Hazards

• Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and tissue.
• Required to be available at all times to respond to student, parent, or building level emergency situations.
• Interaction with a wide variety of students, including those with special needs.

Employment at Joseph K. Lumsden Bahweting Anishnabe P.S.A. is on an "at-will" basis and is for no definite period and may, regardless of the date or method of payment of wages or salary, be terminated at any time with or without cause. Other than the superintendent, under the direction of the JKL Board of Directors, no supervisor, manager, or other person, irrespective of title or position, has authority to alter the at-will status of your employment or to enter into any employment contract for a definite period of time with you. Any agreement with you altering your at-will employment status must be in writing and signed by the school superintendent.
